Slot Car Computerized Lap Timing and Counting

I have encountered a few questions on the forums that ask
about the Artin power base (PB) and if two could be used at the
same time. My answer to the question would be no, at least not
using the power connectors on both PB. Below you will find a
schematic of an Artin 4 lane PB and a photo of the connector
section. I have labeled the connectors in the photo to
correspond with the connectors in the schematic.
Power connector J1 feeds controllers/lanes 3 & 4.
Power connector J2 feeds controllers/lanes 1 & 2.
The factory wiring does not use brakes but they can be added in
yourself. The Power Supply (PS) is rated at 12vdc @ 150ma x 4.
The actual output measured was 14vdc, I also checked for, four
separate outputs that would seem to be present by the amp rating
(150ma x 4) but there is not. The PS uses an L7812CV which is an
attempt at regulation and will work well for the Artin cars it
was meant for but if four Scalextric cars or the like were used
the L7812CV will not be able to supply the current needed for
all cars if they were to all draw max current at the same time.
All in all the PS is a fairly good one and I would recommend
using two of them if an extra was available. If using two power
supplies plug one into J1 and one into J2, this way lanes 1&2
and 3&4 get their own PS. If I were to add a second 4 lane PB
and use both power connectors on both units what I am
effectively doing is paralleling two power supplies which can be
done but is not recommended. I won't get into why here but if
you are going to attempt it please do some research on it as
there is an effective way of doing it. The easiest and best
thing to do would be to plug one PS into J1 and one PS into J2. |
